Exemplary case of academic-industrial cooperation in the medical laser sector
Expected to contribute to the competitiveness of the domestic medical laser industry
The President of Korean Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery(KSLMS) and Bundang Seoul National University Hospital Biomedical Research Institute’s director Rong Min Baek and the President of WONTECH, Jong Won Kim, have announced on 8TH of December to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for close cooperation in the development, production, clinical research and medical laser improvement.
The outline of the MOU contains that WONTECH contributes to the development of domestic medical laser by research and development of medical laser devices, and the KSLMS is responsible for clinical verification of the device through research and development of medical laser and clinical application. WONTECH recently released the 450 Picosecond Laser “Picocare” and through the MOU with the KSLMS, it is expected to astonish the global market.
Recently the technology of domestic medical laser industry has made an outstanding development and received wide respect. Compared to countries with leading medical laser companies, Korean local companies started late in the 1970 to distribute medical devices. In the past most of the companies were dependent to imports but nowadays a lot of companies reached the level of developing their own devices, so that the latecomer image could put behind. Domestic laser device manufacturers such as WONTECH contribute a lot of efforts but also the cooperation with local doctors and national conferences have played a big role in regards of pushing the domestic medical sector.
The chairman of WONTECH, Jong Won Kim, has shown his expectation that “It is inevitably important to have the feedback and clinical data from the doctors who practically use the devices for manufacturer side. Thus, WONTECH will have better cooperation with abundant doctor resources to draw a high quality clinical data through this MOU with KSLMS.
The president of KSLMS, Rong Min Baek, has mentioned “It is necessary to have the active support and cooperation of manufacturer in order for doctors to understand the devices more clearly and research the more efficacious treatment methods.” He has also shown his commitment that through this MOU, he will give the continuous support and cooperation to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean medical laser field which has reached the world-class level.
On the other hand, KSLMS has started the mutual exchange with Industry University Institute Collaboration for the globalization of Korean Medical Laser since 2014. In order to achieve this, KSLMS has tried a variety of efforts to allow the researchers including the laser device companies to apply for regular member and it is considered as the exemplary case of Industry University Institute Collaboratio.
